San Diego’s Turf Supper Club

San Diego is a tourist destination and a resort town at the heart of it. However, if you look hard enough, you’ll find that there are plenty of unique and fabulous local spots in the city. Of these, the Turf Supper Club is one of my favorites.

The Turf Club is a no frills Martini lounge and steak joint located in the eclectic neighborhood of Golden Hill. It feels like an old “swingers” bar from the minute you step inside. Grab a stool at the bar for the best service.

This place is dark, noisy, and always crowded, but it’s full of character. The menu is simple; salad, steak, and French bread. What’s even more unique about the Turf Club is that you grill your own steaks in the middle of the main dining area! You have to fight your way to a spot by the grill but it’s worth it for the experience. The food is basic but surprisingly good – perhaps it’s the aura of the Turf Club that draws locals there every night. It’s also very inexpensive, especially compared to its trendy counterpart, “Gaslamp Strip Club” which is downtown.

If you like local gems, head to the Turf Supper Club any night of the week while visiting San Diego. You’ll likely be impressed by the vibe of this older establishment. Make sure to dress casually since you’ll be cooking up your own steaks.

The Turf Club is an experience but not for everyone. If you don’t like that old dive bar feel or you don’t want to cook your own steak or you take issue with paper plates, the Turf Club might not rock your boat. But, if you like different, casual, with the air of throw-back…all while eating a good steak with good friends, check out the Turf Club. It isn’t a ‘rare’ experience but it is a good one!
