Pet-friendly San Diego

San Diego is a first class tourist destination for people, but did you know it’s also one of the best spots to bring your pets?
“Dog Beach” in Ocean Beach is the place to “see and be seen” for both dogs and their owners. When planning your travel arrangements, be sure to check out our local vacation rentals, where you can find a rental to suit you and your pet’s needs.
VRBO is a recommended site to research and book vacation rentals; just look for the paw icon on the listings to search for the properties that will accept your pet. Be sure to mention your pet and any special requirements when filling out the reservation requests. An insider’s tip is that you can also find last minute deals on vacation rentals on San Diego’s Craigslist.
If you prefer staying downtown, the W Hotel in Little Italy is pet-friendly. You’ll have to pay a non-refundable cleaning fee and upgraded charge to have your pet stay in the room, but the staff will treat your furry friend like a V.I.P! Don’t miss PAW (“Pets Are Welcome”) Happy Hour at the W Hotel on the last Tuesday of every month! The W Hotel is located at 421 West B Street in Little Italy (619-398-3100).
While visiting San Diego, you might want to consider Doggie Day Camp or a pet hotel, so that you can head out to the attractions during the day with your friends or family. For dogs, I recommend PetSmart’s Doggie Day Camp in La Jolla (8657 Villa La Jolla Dr, La Jolla, CA 92037, 858-535-9175).
I often travel to San Diego, and I love the convenience of their Doggie Day Camp. They are located right off the I-5 in La Jolla, which is an easy location to access from almost anywhere in San Diego. Your pet will even get a “paw”gress report at the end of the day. Best of all, if you have a social dog, they’ll love day camp! Remember to call them in advance to make a reservation, and to find out what vaccination paperwork you’ll need to have before dropping off your pet. They also accept other types of pets and their prices are quite reasonable.
Last, what would vacation be without a trip to the mall to go shopping? Feel free to bring your dog with you to Westfield UTC Shopping Center in the La Jolla area. This is a beautiful outdoor mall and many shops will have water and treats available for your dogs. Westfield UTC is located at 4545 La Jolla Village Drive in San Diego (858) 546-8858). Don’t forget to clean up after your pet!

Good question! I’ve never flown with a dog, but I have flown with cats, which was quite the experience. Here’s an article that might answer some of your questions: http://www.healthypet.com/library_view.aspx?ID=96. Good luck!
