Located on a site overlooking the Pacific Ocean, MCASD has been a landmark in La Jolla since it was established in 1941. Designed in 1916 by Irving Gill and originally the home of celebrated philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, the 60,000 square-foot Museum boasts breathtaking coastal views. A renovation and expansion by Venturi, Scott Brown, and Associates was completed in 1996. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is the region’s foremost forum devoted to the exploration and presentation of the art of our time. Through exhibitions, film and video screenings, lectures, multimedia performances, and educational programs for visitors of all ages, MCASD reflects the complexity and diversity of contemporary creative expression. The Museum’s collection of over 4,000 works of art includes paintings, sculpture, drawings, photographs, videos, and multimedia works, spanning everything from pop art and minimalist to post-modern architecture and Latin American art. Visit the outdoor garden gallery where kids can interact with the art work in a park-like setting, grab lunch in the Museum Cafe, and don’t forget to stop by the Museum Store for artful housewares, books, jewelry and more.
